| Why Replace
Your Timing Belt ?
What is a timing belt?
It is a flat, rubber belt with teeth. It synchronizes
valve and piston movement inside your engine.
Timing belts have replaced timing chains to help
make today's sophisticated engines possible. They
are lighter, quieter, more efficient and more
economical than chains.
Where is the timing belt located?
Your timing belt is inside your engine. You can't
see it when you open the hood. To find out if
you have one, you can check your owner's manual
or ask your service technician. The second choice
is your best bet. They can tell you if you do
have one and when it should be replaced quickly.
Why do I need to know?
Like any other part on your vehicle, timing belts
eventually wear out. They need to be replaced
before they break! A broken timing belt can result
in major engine damage.
What happens when it breaks?
Your car stops ... dead!
The good news. You need a tow to a service station
or repair shop. In addition to inconvenience,
you'll need a new belt installed.
The bad news. If your vehicle has an "interference"
engine, your engine may have major internal damage.
A broken belt can result in an open valve being
struck by a moving piston. This can damage valves,
pistons, cylinder heads and cylinder walls. In
addition to the inconvenience and the cost of
the tow, you may need a new engine!
